Miss Norma’s Diary – January 10, 1962 – “Barry was in the record store. He pinched me in the butt”

Wednesday

“Today I went to school. It was boring. After school, Barbara and I went down the street. Barry was in the record store. He pinched me in the butt. Then he asked where I was. Then he said, ‘did you go back to the drive-in?’ and ‘have you used your tickets?’ Barry asked me what I was going to do tonight. I said watch T.V. He said ‘go to the show tonight, ok?’ I said I don’t know, I’ll think about it. He said, ‘Well you better be there.’ Then Barbara and I left. I got a new battery for my radio today. But I couldn’t find a diary. At night I stayed home and watched. T.V.”

Monday

“Today I went to school. It was very boring. I got an A on my homemaking notebook. I sure hope that Mr. D doesn’t give me an F on the last report card cause don’t feel like going to summer school. But i am pretty sure I will have to. All day on & off I have been thinking about Lonnie. At night I stayed home and watched T.V. Barbara and I didn’t go down the street cause she had to work in the Record Store. She has to work in there tomorrow too.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – January 6, 1962 – “I got my hand stuck in his pocket, only it didn’t look like it was in his pocket”

Saturday

“Today I got up and took a bath. Then Barbara and I went down the street. We saw Ralph’s car. Then later we saw Dave drive by and he looked at us. Later he went by again. Then Barbara and I were going up the street and this guy drove by and I kept looking at him he was real cute and he was driving a red pick-up truck. Then as we were walking to the record store he went by again and he peeped the horn. We saw Asa and Bennie and Ray. At night Barbara and Ia and I went to the Roxy Ralph was there and Barry, Don, John Dan and a bunch of other kids. Barbara, Ian and I were sitting there messing off and John and Richard was sitting in front of us and in front of them was Don and in front of him was Barry, Ralph and a bunch of other guys. Well anyway I was trying to get money out of his pocket so I could get him a coke and I got my hand stuck in his pocket, only it didn’t look like it was in his pocket. I was trying to pull my hand out of his pocket and John turned around and then I got my hand out and real loud, I said ‘I couldn’t get it’ and all the guys started cracking up. It was so funny. I got up real fast cause I couldn’t take it and I almost ran up the isle. Then I waited up there for Barbara and I started laughing. This key kept looking at me. I think he must have thought I was crazy standing up there laughing to myself. Later when Barbara and I were up in the snack bar, Barry came up and he came over by us. He turned and looked at me kind of out of the corner of his eye. Real sexy like. It got me jazzed. After a while, Ian and those guys were making loud noises and some boy went up and got the usher. Ian and them ditched. Some of them went to the other side of the show and Dan sat between Barbara and I. Then later they came back. What a blast.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – January 3, 1962 – “Ricky came over to see Ian and I was sitting there in my robe and slippers”

Wednesday

“Today I stayed home from school because I have a cold and a sore throat. I got up at 7:30 and I made some hot cocoa and went back to bed at 8:00 o’clock. When I woke up again it was 12:00. Mabel and I played rummy and Ricky came over to see Ian and I was sitting there in my robe and slippers, no make up on and my hair wasn’t combed. I wonder what he thought. Pat came over for a few minutes and she said Marie got a letter from Lonnie and he said ‘Tell Norma hi, hi hi’ I got all jazzed. I hope he comes down soon. At night I stayed home and watched television.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – January 2, 1962 – “I didn’t know he was so cute”

Tuesday

“Today I went to school. I almost fell asleep. It sure was boring. After school Barbara and I went down the street and we saw Ray. H kept walking around the block about 6 times. When we got to the corner we saw Asa and he starting walking around the block too. When we went in Stadler’s drug store, David and Paul were in there so we walked out. But they saw us and right after we left they left. So we went in Corenots and they couldn’t find us. But when we started to leave they saw us so we just went on and we went to Thriftys. Bennie was in there and then I looked over and saw Barry was with him. So we were going out of the store Barry looked at me and said, ‘where ya going?’ but I didn’t answer him. It just didn’t sink in that he said anything to me until I was gone. When we left Ray was still walking and so was Asa. Benny was just standing there looking at them. Then we went to the Bar-B-Q Pit, Bobby was there. Then Eddie came to work. He kept looking at us. Charlie and A.T. Drove by in a kind of candy apple colored car with gold pin stripes all over it. We sure were surprised when we saw Charlie driving. Then Barbara and I were going up the street and this guy was walking towards us and as he got closer I looked right into his eyes. He did the same. Barbara told me that it was Ronnie. I didn’t know he was so cute. There sure was a lot of guys out today. At night I stayed home and watched television.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – January 1, 1962 – “She said she will try and get Lonnie to come down at Easter”

Monday

“Today I got up at 12:00. Bar got up at 8:00. I don’t know show she made it after going to bed at 1:00. After I got up I ate and went for a drive with Barb’s mom and dad. When we got home I ate dinner and watched T.V. At nite I stayed home and watched T.V. Brad and his wife and kid and Bob and Marie came over. They ate dinner with us. Marie said she was going to write Lonnie and tell him I said hi.. She said she will try and get Lonnie to come down at Easter. Easter is on April 22nd, almost four whole months. Lonnie’s birthday is on April 12th, I think or on April 17th. He will be seventeen. I saw Don today.”
