Miss Norma’s Diary – October 31, 1960 – “He asked me what us girls was gonna do tonight”

“Today I went to school and after school Connie and I went down the street and when I got home Mabel said Verne called so I called him back.

He asked me what us girls was gonna do tonight

and I told him we were gonna go around to all the schools. Connie and I and Barb met Bonnie down at Martha Forum at 6:30. So, Barb, Connie me Wayne, Brian, Bonnie, Verne, Benny and Ray went to all the schools. Ray, Benny and Brian tried to pants Verne but they didn’t succeed. So we left those 3 guys and I was mad because Butch wasn’t there. He went home and I got mad at Barbara because she didn’t want to go anywhere she couldn’t see Loren so I called her a bitch real loud right in front of Mrs. Richards. Later, we went down to the beach and Verne was real sweet. He said he would tell Butch off for spoiling my evening. Norma + Butch. Connie and Verne”

“Today us girls didn’t get up until 10:30. When we did get up we went down to the golf course and Loren was working and he said ‘hi’ to me. Then we left and we started to walk to La Jolla but we got to tired so we went back to the golf course.

Then we went to Sears then we went up to my house and played records.

Then pretty soon, Barbara and Karen had to go home and eat. So later, when we was listening to records, Vern came to get his jacket and he asked Connie if she was going down to the golf course later and she said ‘yes’. So, later, we went down to get Barbara but she couldn’t go out. So we went down there but Vern wasn’t there. So we went looking for him but we couldn’t find him. So, we went back to the course and waited. Then Vern and Benny came. Vern said exactly what he said to me when he first liked me, I don’t think he’ll like Connie very long. I hope he won’t”

Miss Norma’s Diary – October 29, 1960 – “That made me mad even though I like Butch but I was mat at Connie”

Saturday

“Today all day Barbara and I decorated for the party and at night, just a few minutes before eight o’ clock, Paul and another guy came and Barbara and I were real nervous. Butch and Brian came then I really got nervous. There was a lot more boys than girls so Daddy wanted to invite Connie. So, I said o.k.. So, when she got here, Vern started talking to her. Then we went on a salvage hunt. We had the 2 groups, all made up but nobody wanted to go in that group. So, Butch and I went in the group that we was supposed to but there were too many in that group. Then so Benny told me and Butch to go in the other group so we did. The other group got back to the house and they started dancing. Vern and Connie was dancing then they were sitting on the couch and Vern had his arm around her.

That made me mad even though I like Butch but I was mat at Connie.

Pretty soon, Butch asked me to dance. So, we danced a lot of dances together in a row and he was holding me real tight. Then Loren asked me to dance 2 or 3 times. So, I did and I danced with Benny a lot and I danced with Paul, Bob, Brian and Wayne asked me to dance and I asked him to dance a lot too. Later on, Vern and Connie was sitting in the orange chair. Verne had his arm around her and then he would kiss her. Once in a while, Loren would dance with Barbara but she was mad because Loren danced almost every dance with Bonnie. We had a real blast at the party and after the boys went home, which was 2:00 o’clock, we didn’t get to sleep till 5:30″

“Today I went to school and after school Barbara and I went to the store to get stuff for the party. At night, Barbara and I went to the show and we saw Bonnie, Brian, Bern, Wayne and Butch and when we walked down in the front row. Butch called my name and I smiled at him and so we went on down and sat in the front seats and Butch came down there and sat on the only seat left which was next to Barb. So, I moved over and sat by Butch and then Butch said, ‘How come you sat way down here?’ And I said, ‘We couldn’t find any seats up there.’ And he said, ‘Oh yeah there’s lots of seats up there.’ and I said, ‘Well, do you want to go there and sit?’ and he said, ‘Sure’ And so we went up there and sat for about 5 or 10 minutes.

We just sat there then pretty soon he put his arm around me and from there I laid my head on his shoulder and then later he started kissing me about every 5 minutes.

Barbara and Bonnie would walk up and Bonnie would start cracking up. Then Brian would walk by us and he would say, ‘Let’s have none of that.’ That’s when he had his arm around me and I had my head on his shoulder. Somehow, Bonnie talked me into asking Benny to the party and Wayne came up and talked to Butch and me and so I just had to invite Wayne. Norma + Butch”

“Today I went to school and in English, I went up to get a piece of paper and Warren came up right after me and got a piece of paper and we both had our hand in the drawer at the same time. So, I took my hand out and slammed the drawer on Warren’s hand then. I walked back to my seat and then Warren went back to his seat.

He kept staring at me and smiling a bunch.

I talked to Butch and after school Butch talked to me. He asked me what time I was going to go down to the beach after school. Barbara and I went to the beach and Bonnie was there. We didn’t stay down there very long. At night, we stayed at my house and we planned the party. Today in school Barbara asked Vern if he was going to the show and he said he doubted it.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – October 26, 1960 – “Just as we got to the vacant lot there come these two guys waking towards us”

Wednesday

“Today I went to school and after school Barbara and I walked down to the beach. Just as we got to the vacant lot there come these two guys waking towards us. I didn’t think to notice who it was, I just figured it was two guys but it was Brian and Vern. As we got up to them, Vern stopped and said ‘hi’ to me. He wanted to go back to the beach but Brian didn’t. So, they went on. So, we went down to the beach and Bonnie and Butch was down there and Bonnie’s big brother and Wayne was in his car. They were all going shopping. At night nobody was there so I called up Bonnie and asked her if she was coming down there. She, she did. Loren said Vern went up to the ridge. So, when Bonnie came she went up to the ridge. About 8:30 they came back. I asked Bonnie if Vern still liked me ans she said she didn’t know. While Bonnie and Benny was gone, Butch came to the course to find Bonnie. So, he played baseball and I went over and watched him.

He had a coke and when he took a drink of it he asked me if I wanted a drink.

So, I took one. Pretty soon, he went home and he said he’d see me. I sure hope Vern still likes me because Barbara likes Loren and I think maybe he likes her a little bit but I’m not sure and Bonnie likes Brian, I think she still does anyway. I think Brian likes her a little bit. So, everybody will have a boyfriend but me and I don’t know of any other boy that I could like, that would like me. Brian and Vern don’t know if they’re going to come to the party and Bonnie said Brian said he was gonna go out Saturday night and get drunk and I said, ‘Isn’t he gonna come to the party?’ and she said, ‘Probably, but he can’t if he’s drunk.’”

Miss Norma’s Diary – October 25, 1960 – “Bonnie said she thinks Butch like me”

Tuesday

“Today I went to school and after school, Barbara went down to the beach to see Bonnie. So, when we got down there, I asked her where Vern was and she said him and Brian just left. So, we went looking for them and about 4:00 o’clock, we went back to the golf course and Vern and Benny was there. When we walked in there, I said to Barbara, ‘I get the feeling Verne is gonna be mad at me.’ So, when we walked in there, Benny said to Vern, ‘Here comes your girlfriend.’ But Vern wouldn’t even look at me. Then later, Vern left. He was real mat at me. At night, we went down to the course and Bonnie, Vern, Butch and Wayne was there. Bonnie played a game with us and Butch kept score. Bonnie said she thinks Butch like me.

Vern wouldn’t talk to me still.

So, later, he wanted Bonnie to give him a cigarette but she wouldn’t give it to him. She gave it to me to give it to him. So, I went over and game it to him and he said, ‘Oh! Thank you Norma!’ But that’s all he said. Barbara was real happy because Loren was doing her homework after everybody had gone but Barbara and me and Vern and Bonnie. Bonnie took some water and sprayed it on me with her fingers. Then Barbara did it. So, I did it to Vern and he took me and sat me down on the bowling machine. And as Bonnie and Vern was leaving, I said I’d see Bonnie at the beach tomorrow and I whispered to her to get Vern down there too. Norma + Vern”

“Today I went to school and I was telling Connie and Sally about what happened yesterday and Connie was real jealous and Sally kept telling Connie over and over and Connie was really mad. In gym today, we had to dance and it was a lot of fun but I had to dance with Warren. He had soft hands and they were warm to hold but so are Vern’s hands. After school, I saw Bruce and we said ‘hi’ to each other.

After school, Barb and I went to Bonnie’s house and her brother told us she was at the beach.

So, we went down there ans she said, ‘Vern was at Brian’s house, but they said they were coming down.’ So, we stayed down there for a long time and I found out that Wayne and Bruce are twins. Pretty soon, Barb and I had to leave. So, I told Bonnie to tell Vern go get his butt down there tomorrow. Norma and Vern”

Sunday

“Today I went out with Barbara at about 3:00 o’clock and we went down to Bonnie’s house and their phone rang and Vern wanted Barbara, Bonnie and I to come down to Ray’s house. I didn’t want to but I went anyway. When we got down there they were all drinking. Barbara and I sat on the chairs and Ray came over and pulled me over to the couch and he put his arm around me and Benny was on the other side of me. I was mad because Vern wouldn’t sit by me. Pretty soon, Barbara a I wanted to leave but Ray took our purses and hid them. Ray and Benny was trying to take us in the bedroom to get our purses. I put my arms around Vern to try to keep Ray from pulling me into the bedroom. Then later Vern was sitting on the couch and I sat down real close to Vern and I told him we had to get our purses because if we didn’t go home now she couldn’t go out tonight.

I thought Vern was mad at me because he wouldn’t even sit by me or put his arm around me like the other guys were.

Then I asked Brian to get our purses and he said, ‘I’ll get them if I can kiss you.’ So, he did. He got them then he kissed me again on the lips. I was so shook up, I didn’t know what I was doing. Then I went out to the alley with our purses. Barbara was still in the bedroom with Ray and Benny. They both kissed her. When I was standing out in the alley, Brian and Vern and Wayne came out and talked to me. Brian said, ‘Do you still want me to come to the party?’ and I said ‘yes’. Then pretty soon Barbara came out of the house. As we started to leave, Ray came running out of the house and said, ‘Wait, I want a good-bye kiss.’ But he didn’t get one.

Later, we was at the gold course and Brian came. He asked us to come back to the party but we wouldn’t. I asked Brian if Vern was mad at me and he said, ‘Only because you left.’ Later, Bonnie, Vern and Benny came there. Vern went into the bathroom and he was in there for a long time. He was throwing up. Later, he came out and I went up to him and he was still a little bit feeling happy and I ask him is he was still sick and he kept saying, ‘Hello Norma.’ Then Benny was gonna hit him. So, Vern came up to me and he put his hands around my waist and he kept turning me around. Then I was sitting on the bench and Vern was walking over to the 19th hole and he said, ‘Don’t go away.’ Then Vern asked me if I was getting mad at him and I said, ‘No, not very much.’ But I didn’t really mean it. At 8:00 o’clock, I had to call Bill to come and get us. I asked Vern if he was gonna go to the show Friday night and he said ‘yes’. and by that time, Bill was there. So, we started to leave and Vern said to me, ‘Don’t I get a good night kiss?’ And I smiled at him and said, ‘Not now, my uncle’s here.’ And he smiled. I wish I could have kissed Vern, I really wanted to. Lauren said he would come to our party. Norma Loves Vern.”

Saturday

“Today in the morning Barbara and I walked down by the M.G. Course and Vern and Ray was there. Vern looked over at me and smiled and then he waved and I waved back. Later we were walking up Thomas (st.) and we saw Vern and Wayne and they were collecting for their paper route and they saw us and we walked up the street.

Then I looked back and Vern waved at me.

Then we were following them all around then Barbara had to go home so about an hour later, we went down to the golf course and Vern wasn’t there so we went up Thomas (st.) and we went past Ginger’s house and Bonnie came running out of the house and she asked Bonnie if she lived there and she said ‘yes’ then she said, ‘Vern and those guys went to the Plunge.’ So, when we left, we walked to the Plunge and Vern was sitting down watching those guys swimming and we went in there and sat down by Vern and Barbara said, ‘How come you aren’t swimming?‘ and he said they wouldn’t let him because he had a sore on his knee and he wouldn’t even look at me or say anything and later we left. I was real mad at Vern and when we got back to P.B. We went by Bonnie’s house and she came out and talked to us and she asked me if I saw Vern down at the Plunge and I said, ‘Yes, I saw him and he didn’t say one word to me.’ And then we started to leave and I told Bonnie to tell Vern I’ll see him tomorrow and he better talk to me and Bonnie started laughing.
