Miss Norma’s Diary – October 1, 1960 – “I ran through the vacant lot and down to the miniature golf course”

Saturday

“Today I went down the street with Barbara. First we went down to the miniature golf course and Mr. And Mrs. Richards and Loren was there. When we walked up there, Loren smiled at us. Then later we walked down by the beach and Ted was down there. On the way back to the miniature gold course I looked across the street and I saw Loren walking by Bradshaw’s and at first we thought he was going to catch the bus but then we thought he was going to Oscars. But when he crossed the street, he went into Foodbasket. We couldn’t see Loren in there so we started looking at the books and then I looked over at the counter and saw Loren. So, I turned around real fast and started looking at the books again. Then in a minute, Loren came up to us and smiled and he said, ‘You shouldn’t read these kind of books’ and then he got some food to go. Then he walked out and back the way he came.

So, Barbara and I ran through the vacant lot and down to the miniature golf course . . .

. . .and about 5 minutes later, Loren came. He smiled at us. Then he went into the office and started eating. Barbara and I walked over and he started talking to us. Later, Mr. Richardswas standing by Barbara and I and Barbara was asking me how we was going to get to La Jolla school next Friday for the football game and I said, ‘I don’t know’ and Mr. Richards, we think, said, ‘Well, I guess Loren will have to take next Friday night off.’ Barbara and I both think that’s what he said but he would have said, ‘Well, I guess you’ll just have to take Friday night off’ but he said that, it wouldn’t sound right because how could we take next Friday night off? Later, we left. After a while, we were walking down the street and there were three boys way up the street from us and I said to Barbara, ‘That’s Warren!’ and I got all shook as we walked past them. Warren just stared at me then as we passed them, I looked back and Warren was looking at a car in the car lot. At night, I stayed home.”
