Miss Norma’s Diary – September 20, 1960 – ” Loren was working but he didn’t flirt hardly at all tonight”

Tuesday

“Today I went to school as usual and as usual, nothing exciting happened. After school, Connie and I went down the street and we tried all kinds of clothes on again. At night, Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and as we had hoped, Loren was working but he didn’t flirt hardly at all tonight. There was this big fat ugly guy with some other ugly guy ad the fat one kept staring at me and smiling and I would give him a dirty look all the time. . .

When daddy came to pick us up he had the truck. . .

. . .Barbara and I climbed into the back with that fat guy watching us all the time. He was just staring at us so Barbara him him the finger and I point my thumb down meaning ‘to go down’. Before that, Mr. Richards gave us a free game and Loren didn’t even say ‘bye’ to us. I love Malcolm. “

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 19, 1960 – “these guys stopped their black car and asked us if we wanted a ride”

Monday

“Today I went to school and nothing much happened. After school Connie and I went down the street and tried all kinds of clothes on. At night, Connie and I went down the street again so I could get my skirt out of lay-a-way. When we were walking by Ralph’s, these guys stopped their black car and asked us if we wanted a ride and Connie said, ‘No thanks’ and I just looked the other way. Later we were walking by Woolworth’s and Bruce and Jerry walked by us and Bruce smile at me and said something but I don’t know exactly what he said. . .

Bruce is really getting cuter now. . .

. . .I love Malcolm even though he is 18.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 18, 1960 – “I had a new comic book in my purse”

Sunday

“Today in the morning Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and Mr. Richards and Loren was working. When we went up there we looked and we had the lousiest score we ever had before. Pretty soon, Loren
Came up and he looked at the scores and he smiled and said, ‘task, task, task’ (?) Later we left. At night we went down there again. . .

I had a new comic book in my purse when Loren put our purses up on the shelf. . .

2016-09-17-15-08-29

. . .Then Loren looked in my purse and got my comic book out and started reading it. Later, Wayne came and was talking to me all the time. Pretty soon, it started raining and I told her folks, ‘Better come’. Pretty soon, they came so I said ‘bye’ to Loren and Wayne and we left. I love Malcolm.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 17, 1960 – “I went to the drive-in to see ‘A Summer Place'”

Saturday

“Today I woke up at 2:00 and I went down the street with Barbara. At night, Frank, Mabel, Barbara and I went to the

Midway drive-in to see ‘A Summer Place’ and ‘Ice Palace’ . . .

2016-09-13-15-40-18

. . .But we got there real late and we only saw a little bit of the end of ‘A Summer Place’ and Frank didn’t want to stay and see the rest of it so Barbara and I got real mad and the movie ‘Ice Palace’ was no good at all. I love Malcolm.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 16, 1960 – “I noticed a surfboard on top of a car”

Friday

“Today at school nothing much happened. After school, Connie and I went down the street. We were in Penny’s and we saw Edwards and we didn’t want him to see us so we left the store. Then, as we were walking down to Mulling’s I happened to look at the people in front of us. It was Dick and his mother. . .

Connie said something funny so be both started cracking up. . .

2016-09-13-15-39-20

. . .That’s when Dick turned around and looked at us. Later, as we was walking by A & A Hardware, I noticed a surfboard on top of a car. Then I saw Dick sitting in the car. As he passed by, Dick said, ‘Well, Hello!!’ and I said, ‘Hi’ and Dick smiled. At night, I stayed home because if Barbara wanted to go to the drive-in tomorrow night she had to stay home that night. I love Malcolm.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 15, 1960 – “As we were walking, some boy shouted out my name”

Thursday

“Today I went to school, nothing much happened there. After school, Connie and I went down the street. As we were walking, some boy shouted out my name and we looked across the street and Warren and Jerry, Douglas and Dammond (?) and Richard and I don’t know which one called my name. . .

I hope it was Warren. . .

2016-09-13-15-36-35

. . .At night, Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and Loren was there. He talked to us when we came up to the office. When Barb and I got through, Loren talked to us for a while again. Later, Loren’s father came and as Loren was leaving, he looked at us and said, ‘Bye’ and we said, ‘Bye’ back. We were both glad that he said it first. Later, we walked down by Hardie’s house. I love Malcolm with all my heart.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 14, 1960 – ” just sat there and stared at Warren and he looks at me all the time too”

Wednesday

“Today, I went to school. In English and Math class, I just sat there and stared at Warren and he looks at me all the time too but he probably doesn’t like me in the least. At night, Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and Loren was working. When we went up to the office, Loren smiled real big. We started playing the 10th hole first because there was somebody on the first hole. . .

On the chip shot we got the ball stuck so Loren would have to come over and get it but this man got it for me. . .

2016-09-13-15-32-31

. . .On the 14th hole Barbara put a rock down this hole so the balls would get stuck and they did so Barbara got Loren to come over and he tried for about 15 minutes to get them out and finally he got the blower and got them out. All the time Loren was there, he was smiling and talking. When we got finished playing, Jimmy came and so Loren went to his car. Then he ran back and got a book. It looked like a Math book. Then he left again. When he was opening his car door I said, ‘Bye Loren’ and he said ‘Bye’. He said it real high up. Later Palmer came and Jimmy was trying to find out Barbara’s and my phone number. Jimmy said to me, ‘Your birthday’s in July isn’t it?’ and I said ‘Yes’. Anyway, Jimmy’s birthday is on July 2nd, 3rd or later. Barbara and I were goofing out using the phone and Barbara asked, ‘If I call Dickie, will you talk?’ So, I did. Only I thought Barbara meant Darry but she called Dick and I asked for Richard. Then I said to Barbara, ‘Let’s call 6-1-4-6472′ and I didn’t think Jimmy heard me but he said, ‘Who lives there?’ and I said, ‘You mean you don’t know?’ and he said, ‘The boss?’ and then he told Palmer that I was crazy over Malcolm. I love Malcolm.”

So, we didn’t go down to the miniature golf course. . .

2016-09-11-17-52-40

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 12, 1960 – “Later, Kenny was playing checkers with me”

Monday

“Today it was 94 degrees and we were in school. It was so hot I could hardly stand it. When I got home from school, Connie and I went swimming. At night Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course but Loren wasn’t working. His mother was. Barbara and I talked to Mrs. Richards for a while and we found out that Loren is going to State College. Later, Mrs. Richards came so Barbara and I played. When we were about half way through Wayne and some other guy was playing one hole behind us and had a lot of fun. . .

Later, Kenny was playing checkers with me. . .

2016-09-11-19-16-56

. . .We played three games and I won. Well, I guess nothing else happened tonight. I still love Malcolm with all my heart.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – September 11, 1960 – “Loren’s friend asked me what grade I was going into”

Sunday

“Today Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course in the morning. Loren and his father were there. We stayed there for a while and then we walked down to the beach. About 5:00o’clock we went down to the M.G.C. Again and Mr. And Mrs. Richards was there. A little while later, Loren came and his folks left. Later, Loren’s friend came, the one with the little car and Barbara and I were sitting on the bench and he said, ‘Hi’ and we didn’t say anything because we thought he was talking to Loren. . .

So, then he said, ‘What’s the matter, can’t you speak?’. . .

2016-09-02 07.59.38

. . .and I say, ‘Yes, I didn’t know you was talking to me’. Then we asked Loren if he had his shoes with him because he was taking Loren out to dinner with two other guys. I think it’s Loren’s birthday because there was a couple of presents sitting in the office and he was being taken out to dinner. Later, Loren’s friend was sitting in the office by himself and I and Barbara were standing by the 19th hole and Loren’s friend asked me what grade I was going into, then he asked Barbara and he got up and went over to Loren and said something about me going but I’m in the eighth grade and then Loren’s friend must have said something about my age because Loren said ‘About 14, I guess’ and then he looked at me and smiled and turned away real quick. In a few minutes, Barbara and I walked over to watch Loren play baseball and Benny was sitting down at the table with about 6 other guys and Benny said ‘There’s me red headed baby’ and I just about cracked up. In the morning when Loren was there, Barbara asked Loren if he wanted to play golf with us but he said he couldn’t . He had to fix the baseball machine and then he said, ‘But thanks anyway’.

Once I got real jealous of Barbara. She was playing baseball and Loren ad his friend and a few little boys were over there watching her and Loren kept talking and talking to her and I was sitting on the counter, cursing her out silently. That was when we first got there tonight. Loren flirted with us a little bit but not very much. Well, I sure miss Mal a lot already and I’m beginning to miss Loren too because I won’t see him as much now as I did this summer. I love Malcolm with all my heart but I like Loren a lot too. I love Malcolm.”
