Miss Norma’s Diary – August 21, 1960 – “Hardie came over to me and he was standing real close. . .he was showing me how to bowl right “

Sunday

“Today I went out with Barbara and her folks. At 6:15, Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course and Mal was there. So, we asked him to play a game of golf with us so he did. We had quite a bit of fun but not as much as last night. When we were on the 8th hole, Mrs. Richards came over and asked Mal if he wanted to leave now because Loren was there and he said ‘no’ he didn’t want to leave. When we were through playing golf, Mal and his mother left. Mal said ‘goodbye’ to me. Later on, Hardi was there with Loren. Barbara and I were bowling, . . .

. . .Hardie came over to me and he was standing real close to me and he was showing me how to bowl right.

. . .After a while, when Loren was gone and his father was there, Barbara wanted to ask Hardie to come and crash Joy’s party. So, when we were through playing again, Hardie asked Barbara to loan him a nickel. So, she said, ‘Only if you do me a favor.’ And she told him to come and crash the party. I was real mad at Barbara for saying it then because Mr. Richards was standing there listening to her. Then Barbara and I bowled again and Hardie came over by me and smiled and said, ‘You brought me luck.’ And he took his five free games out of his pocket and I smiled at Hardie and said, ‘I got some too.’ I told Barbara, Mr. Richards probably would not like us very much after you saying that about crashing a party and she said, ‘I don’t care. He likes you better than me anyway.’ I Love Malcolm.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 20, 1960 – “I was looking at Mal and he stuck out his tongue at me. It looked real cute”

Saturday

“Today, in the morning, Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course and Jimmy and Loren was there. We went up to the office to get change so we could bowl and Loren said to Barbara, ‘Where do you get all your money?’ And then when I came up to the office Loren said to me, ‘And where do you get all your money?’ and I told him from my mother and he said, ‘Your poor mother.’ And I smiled at him. In the afternoon, Barbara and I went down there and Jimmy and Loren was still there but in a few minutes Mr. and Mrs. Richards and Malcolm was with them. . .

. . .Barbara and I were bowling than all of a sudden, the bowling machine would not work.

2016-08-08 13.33.32

. . .So, Mal came over and was trying to fix it. The he wanted to play to see if it would work and Mrs. Richards said, ‘Let Norma play it.’ I put the dime in for her. So, I gave Mal a dime and said, ‘I want to try to beat you.’ And he smiled and then Barbara put a dime in. So, we were all playing on the same machine. We played about six games with Malcolm and then Mal played golf with some guys. Barbara and I played right behind them and Mal was last so he talked to us. When we were through playing, Barbara and I left and Mal was playing again with that guy. When we were out, I waved to Mal and he waved back. . .

. . .At night, Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course again. When we went up to the office, Loren said, ‘I smell something again.’ Allen was sitting in the office and when he heard Loren say that, he started cracking up. All this time, Mal was sitting in Loren’s car with his friend, playing cards and I was just waiting for it to get dark so they couldn’t see anymore so then Mal would come out. As soon as Barbara and I got through playing golf, we sat on the counter and Mal came up to us and smiled and started talking to us. Then he said ‘Would you like to play a game of golf?’ And I said, ‘Yes’ before Barbara knew what was happening. When we were on about the 6th hole, Mal said, ‘9321 Diamond’ and I looked at him and said, ‘I wonder who lives there?’ and then I laughed and Mal said, ‘Is that where you live?’ And I shook my head ‘yes’. And the way Mal said that, I’m pretty sure he knew I lived there. When we were on the 11th hole, the ball came out of the house and missed the hole. I was looking at Mal and he stuck out his tongue at me. It looked real cute. Barbara and I was talking about school and I said I didn’t want to wear shoes and I said I hate to wear shoes and I hate to go to school and Mal said, ‘What grade are you going into? 2nd?’ And then he laughed. When we were on the 15th hole and I made it in 5 and Barbara said Cindy made it in 2 and she’s only 2 and I said something that I was calling myself ‘2’. When I thought about what I said, Mal was looking at me and I said ‘I’m not 2’ and he laughed. I love Mal.

P.S. When we were on the 2nd hold, we were standing there talking. When the people in front of us were through playing that hole, Mal said, ‘Lowest man goes first, so, go ahead.’ And then he said, ‘Wait a minute, I’m the man here.’ And then he smiled at me. When we was on the 3rd hole, there was some Dentine Gum in 3 wrappers. So, Mal picked it up and asked me if I wanted it and I said ‘no’. So, he ate it and when he started chewing, it sounded like he hadn’t had a piece of gum in months. He asked me who was over there that I knew and I said, ‘Oh, some boy.’ And he asked me to show him to him. So, I did and I think Mal is jealous. That’s why he asked. When we were on the same hole, there was a cat next to us. So Mal picked it up and put it in front of my face and he scared me. A while after that when we were on the chip shot, I looked up at Grandpa’s window and I said, ‘Grandpa’s still got his calendar down.’ And Barbara said, ‘Does he still have the same pictures up there?’ And Mal said, ‘He’s got a pitcher up there?’ And I said, ‘Pictures not pitcher.’

In the afternoon when Barbara and I and Mal was bowling, Wayne came up to me and said, ‘Excuse me.’ And he stuck his finger in my side and tickled me. At night when we got through golfing. Barb told Mr. Richards what Mal’s score was and Mal looked at his father then looked at me. And his father said, ‘Mal must of had something else on his mind.'”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 19, 1960 – “Mal had on a white tee shirt and Levis which he looked real good in”

Friday

“Today I stayed home all day. At night Barbara and Ian and Bill and I went down to the M.G.C. and Loren was there. When we were through playing, Ian asked Loren about the story and he said, ‘I still don’t know if I want to do it.’ So, pretty soon, Malcolm and his father came and I told Ian to go ask Mal if he found anybody for the story. Ian stood there for a long time talking to Mal. Barbara and I were standing there too. . .

. . .Mal had on a white tee shirt and Levis which he looked real good in.

2016-08-08 13.31.58

. . .Ian asked Mal if he had found anybody for the story or if he knew of any real cute girls and when Ian said that, Mal looked at me and smiled and then he looked at Ian and then Ian asked Mal if he knew of any girl that was cute and had a good figure and Mal looked at me again and smiled like he was saying ‘Norma is cute and has a good figure.’ Then Mal started telling Ian about him going to collage. He is going to major in Engineering. He is going to go to the college on September 12th but it doesn’t start until the 19th. He said he wasn’t going to live on the campus and then Ian was telling Mal about his writing and Malcolm said, ‘I’d like to come up and see your writing and your pictures some time.’ Malcolm had his glasses on tonight too. He looks so much better with them on. Ian told Mal that we called Ian a ‘Be-Bop’ and Mal smiled at me and laughed and I got real embarrassed. Pretty soon, Loren and Malcolm left.

P.S. I Love Malcolm with all my heart.

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 18, 1960 – ” We sat there for a long time, me thinking and talking about Malcolm and Barbara about Loren”

Thursday

“Today Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course. Loren and Mr. and Mrs. Richards and Jimmy was there because they got a new bowling machine. . .

. . .Barbara and I played the bowling machine and Loren stood there and watched us.

2016-08-08 13.30.22

. . .He never said anything to us though because all these other guys were there too. As soon as Loren left, we left and we walked to Prospect (street) in La Jolla (CA). On the way to Malcolm’s house about 10 blocks from there, we were walking down by the beach and Mr. and Mrs. Richards drove by us but I didn’t think they saw us. After we had walked by their house, we went up to the corner and sat on the bench. We sat there for a long time, me thinking and talking about Malcolm and Barbara about Loren. When we were at the Miniature golf course in the morning, we heard Loren say this was his day off. So, we knew that he wouldn’t work at night. We did not go down to the M.G tonight. I STILL love Mal.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 17, 1960 – ” and we listened on the other phone”

Wednesday

“Today Barbara and I went to San Diego and at night we went down to the Miniature golf course and Loren and Jimmy was working. When we went up to the office, Loren talked to us. Then we played a game. When we were through, we talked to Jimmy and Loren. Pretty soon, Barbara’s folks came. When we left I said ‘bye’ to Jimmy and ‘goodbye’ to Loren. He smiled and said ‘bye’. As we were walking out, (Blunnder?) said ‘hi’.

. . .When we got home, we told Ian to call Loren. So, he did and we listened on the other phone. Loren still wasn’t very happy about doing the story and he said he would think about it. Then we told Ian to call Malcolm to see if he knew anything about surfing. Mal said he had been on a board a few times and when Barbara and I heard that, we both cracked up. Norma + ???”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 15, 1960 – “And I said, ‘ To hit you over the head with!’ And he smiled”

Monday

“Today I stayed home because Barbara had to work in the Record store. At night, Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and Loren was there. When we went up to the office and gave Loren our cards. Loren said, ‘I can’t take this card because the holes in it aren’t punched right,” and he said, ‘Who did this anyway?’ and I told him his brother did. . .

. . .Of course, Loren was just kidding about my card but he kept us waiting for a long time.

2016-08-08 13.03.48

. . .Then when we were getting our clubs I said, ‘ Can I have one of those little clubs?’ and Loren said, ‘What do you want one of them for?’ And I said, ‘ To hit you over the head with!’ And he smiled and said, ‘Oh, you better not do that. You might hurt me.’ When Barbara and I were through playing, we sat on the counter. I gave Barb a candy mint and then I ate one. Then Loren said, ‘That looks like pretty good candy.’ So, he I gave him a piece. Then Loren said , “Um, I smell something.’ And I said to him, ‘That’s Barbara. She’s got enough perfume on to drown herself in.’ And Loren laughed. Pretty soon after that, Mr. and Mrs. Richards came and Loren left. Before he left, Barbara asked him if he wanted to play a game with us. But he said, ‘no’ as usual. When we were talking to Mrs. Richards, a guy walked by us and Mrs. Richards said, ‘He looks a lot like Malcolm doesn’t he?’  And I said, ‘No, I don’t think so.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 14, 1960 – “We were going to call up Loren and Mal”

Sunday

“Today I went on a picnic with Barbara and her family. At 5 o’clock Barbara and me and Cindy went down to the M.G.C. Cindy had her mow mow (?) on and my shades. When we went up to the office, Malcolm said ‘hi’ and smiled and he said to me, ‘Is that your sister?’ and I said, ‘No, she’s my cousin.’ And he smiled and talked to Cindy. . .

. . .Then Barb and I played a game and I won five free games. . .

2016-08-08 13.01.13

. . .Right after he got through playing, Loren came and Malcolm left. Loren kept talking to Cindy and us. Later on, Margaret came and got Cindy. Then Barbara called Ian on the phone to see about the surfing story. Barbara told Loren about it and he said he didn’t want to be in it. So, Barbara was really mad but I wasn’t too mad. When Ian came down with Bill, we told him Loren wouldn’t do it. So, Ian went and talked to Mr. Richards about it and he gave Ian their phone number and Ian gave Mr. Richards his card. Last night I stayed over night with Barbara and we slept in the living room. We were going to call up Loren and Mal but Barbara’s mother was still awake when we went to sleep.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 13, 1960 – “Malcolm was telling them about his place for staying at college. My heart just dropped”

Saturday

“Today, I took Andy down the street at night. Barbara and I went to the Miniature golf course and Malcolm’s car was there and so was Malcolm. When we went up to the office, Malcolm smiled and talked to us. Then I saw Loren. He was sitting on the floor eating dinner. He looked up at me and smiled and said something, but I don’t know what he said. . .

. . .Tonight, Malcolm had his glasses on. I don’t know why. . .

2016-08-08 12.58.55

. . .Later on, Mr. and Mrs. Richards came and Loren and Malcolm left with Loren’s friends. Later, Loren and Malcolm came back. Mr. and Mrs. Richards friends were there. Malcolm was telling them about his place for staying at college. My heart just dropped. When I heard him say that, I told Barbara, ‘I don’t think Malcolm likes me.’ But she thinks he does and if he does, he sure doesn’t act like it. Anyway, he’s going to college so I probably won’t see him anymore.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 12, 1960 – “I wasn’t very thrilled that Loren was there but then I don’t know that I would be thrilled if Malcolm was there either”

Friday

“Today I went to the zoo with Ian, Mabel and Cindy. When we got back from the zoo and as we were coming from Margaret’s house, I saw Mr. Richards driving by in Malcolm’s car. . . .

. . . At night, Margaret and I played miniature golf and Loren was there.

2016-08-08 09.00.26

. . .I wasn’t very thrilled that Loren was there but then I don’t know that I would be thrilled if Malcolm was there either. As Margaret and I were playing, Margaret said she wanted a candy bar but she didn’t have any money so I told her to get some money out of my purse. So, she went up to Loren and asked for a 3 Musketeers bar and Margaret said Loren was standing there staring at me and so he gave Margaret a Baby Ruth candy bar instead and Loren’s friend was there and he said, ‘Loren, keep your mind on your work.’ Later, Mr. and Mrs Richards came and Loren still stayed. Then we asked Loren for our purses and he said, ‘Oh, I guess you can have them’ and he smiled.”
