Miss Norma’s Diary – August 15, 1960 – “And I said, ‘ To hit you over the head with!’ And he smiled”

Monday

“Today I stayed home because Barbara had to work in the Record store. At night, Barbara and I went down to the miniature golf course and Loren was there. When we went up to the office and gave Loren our cards. Loren said, ‘I can’t take this card because the holes in it aren’t punched right,” and he said, ‘Who did this anyway?’ and I told him his brother did. . .

. . .Of course, Loren was just kidding about my card but he kept us waiting for a long time.

. . .Then when we were getting our clubs I said, ‘ Can I have one of those little clubs?’ and Loren said, ‘What do you want one of them for?’ And I said, ‘ To hit you over the head with!’ And he smiled and said, ‘Oh, you better not do that. You might hurt me.’ When Barbara and I were through playing, we sat on the counter. I gave Barb a candy mint and then I ate one. Then Loren said, ‘That looks like pretty good candy.’ So, he I gave him a piece. Then Loren said , “Um, I smell something.’ And I said to him, ‘That’s Barbara. She’s got enough perfume on to drown herself in.’ And Loren laughed. Pretty soon after that, Mr. and Mrs. Richards came and Loren left. Before he left, Barbara asked him if he wanted to play a game with us. But he said, ‘no’ as usual. When we were talking to Mrs. Richards, a guy walked by us and Mrs. Richards said, ‘He looks a lot like Malcolm doesn’t he?’  And I said, ‘No, I don’t think so.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 14, 1960 – “We were going to call up Loren and Mal”

Sunday

“Today I went on a picnic with Barbara and her family. At 5 o’clock Barbara and me and Cindy went down to the M.G.C. Cindy had her mow mow (?) on and my shades. When we went up to the office, Malcolm said ‘hi’ and smiled and he said to me, ‘Is that your sister?’ and I said, ‘No, she’s my cousin.’ And he smiled and talked to Cindy. . .

. . .Then Barb and I played a game and I won five free games. . .

2016-08-08 13.01.13

. . .Right after he got through playing, Loren came and Malcolm left. Loren kept talking to Cindy and us. Later on, Margaret came and got Cindy. Then Barbara called Ian on the phone to see about the surfing story. Barbara told Loren about it and he said he didn’t want to be in it. So, Barbara was really mad but I wasn’t too mad. When Ian came down with Bill, we told him Loren wouldn’t do it. So, Ian went and talked to Mr. Richards about it and he gave Ian their phone number and Ian gave Mr. Richards his card. Last night I stayed over night with Barbara and we slept in the living room. We were going to call up Loren and Mal but Barbara’s mother was still awake when we went to sleep.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 13, 1960 – “Malcolm was telling them about his place for staying at college. My heart just dropped”

Saturday

“Today, I took Andy down the street at night. Barbara and I went to the Miniature golf course and Malcolm’s car was there and so was Malcolm. When we went up to the office, Malcolm smiled and talked to us. Then I saw Loren. He was sitting on the floor eating dinner. He looked up at me and smiled and said something, but I don’t know what he said. . .

. . .Tonight, Malcolm had his glasses on. I don’t know why. . .

2016-08-08 12.58.55

. . .Later on, Mr. and Mrs. Richards came and Loren and Malcolm left with Loren’s friends. Later, Loren and Malcolm came back. Mr. and Mrs. Richards friends were there. Malcolm was telling them about his place for staying at college. My heart just dropped. When I heard him say that, I told Barbara, ‘I don’t think Malcolm likes me.’ But she thinks he does and if he does, he sure doesn’t act like it. Anyway, he’s going to college so I probably won’t see him anymore.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 12, 1960 – “I wasn’t very thrilled that Loren was there but then I don’t know that I would be thrilled if Malcolm was there either”

Friday

“Today I went to the zoo with Ian, Mabel and Cindy. When we got back from the zoo and as we were coming from Margaret’s house, I saw Mr. Richards driving by in Malcolm’s car. . . .

. . . At night, Margaret and I played miniature golf and Loren was there.

2016-08-08 09.00.26

. . .I wasn’t very thrilled that Loren was there but then I don’t know that I would be thrilled if Malcolm was there either. As Margaret and I were playing, Margaret said she wanted a candy bar but she didn’t have any money so I told her to get some money out of my purse. So, she went up to Loren and asked for a 3 Musketeers bar and Margaret said Loren was standing there staring at me and so he gave Margaret a Baby Ruth candy bar instead and Loren’s friend was there and he said, ‘Loren, keep your mind on your work.’ Later, Mr. and Mrs Richards came and Loren still stayed. Then we asked Loren for our purses and he said, ‘Oh, I guess you can have them’ and he smiled.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 11, 1960 – “God Norma, I don’t know what’s the matter with that guy. He keeps staring at you.”

Thursday

“Today I went Loren the street with Mommy and Marie. When we walked by Pennys, I looked down at the M.G.C and I saw Loren’s car.  So, Mommy and Marie went in Penny’s and I went to Barbara’s. When I got there I told her that Loren’s car was there and she said she knew. She said her and her dad drove by there a while ago and she said she saw a car just like Malcolm’s car parked 4 blocks from the M.G.C. So, first we walked down to the Miniature golf course to see if Loren was there but he was not. Lincoln was there. At night Ian, Mabel and I played miniature golf and Loren was there. As we were playing, Ian said to me, . . .

. . .”God Norma, I don’t know what’s the matter with that guy. He keeps staring at you.’

2016-08-08 08.58.42

I said, ‘Who? The one who is working in the office?’ And Ian said, ‘Yea.’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s all right, that’s Malcolm’s brother Loren.’

Tonight Ian won five free games again and he gave them to me. After we played Miniature golf, we went to the drive-in to see ‘The Rat Race’. It was with some crappy movie. At the drive-in, Ian told me he was going to do a story on ‘surfers’ now and he wants me to find some guy to take me out on his surfboard and get some pictures. So, I told him about Loren and he said, ‘Will you talk to him about it sometime?’  . . .

. . .P.S. I just can’t make up my mind now if I really do love Malcolm.  I don’t know what goes wrong with me when I see him, I get nervous and I just think he is the most wonderful guy I’ve ever met. But then after I don’t see him for a few days, I think I like Loren much better and I’m not even nervous around Loren. Maybe when Malcolm goes to college, I will forget about him completely, but I don’t think that could ever be possible. I just don’t make up mind.

P.P.S. It was Malcolm’s car parked 4 blocks away from the Miniature golf course.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 10, 1960 – “I still love Malcolm an awful lot, even if he is older”

Wednesday

“Today Barbara and I went down the street today. At night, Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course. When we got there, Mrs. Richards was there. She said Malcolm was supposed to work but he went home to change clothes. When Barbara and I got through playing (and we both won 5 free games) I saw Loren driving up. When Loren came up to the office, Mrs. Richards said to him, ‘Norma and Barbara just won the 19th hold again,’ And Loren said to me, ‘You’re mean, you cheated again,’ and then he smiled. After that, Mrs. Richards left. Later on, Barbara and I was sitting on the counter and Loren came up and put the club in my face, when I jumped, he said, ‘Some people sure are nervous.’ Then Jimmy said,. . .

. . .’Now be quiet Loren because Norma is going to read us her diary.’. .

2016-08-04 11.31.55

. . .And Loren said, ‘Oh boy!’ Then I got out my book and Loren said, ‘Let me see it.’ So, I gave it to him and he looked at the pictures in the book. I said to him, ‘I didn’t know there was any pictures in there’ and Loren said, ‘You didn’t? That’s the first thing I look for in a book. If it doesn’t have pictures, I won’t read it.’ And then he said, ‘ I don’t remember any of these picture in the movie.’ Then, later, when Barbara and I were still sitting on the counter, I turned around and Loren had glasses on. He looked at me and he took them off real fast and he put them on the shelf. Then later, Jimmy said to us, ‘Let’s bowl.’ So, Barbara and I played against Loren and Jimmy. And Loren kept going real close to the glass. I don’t think he could see the score from far back. A little later, I said goodbye to Jimmy and then I looked at Loren and I said ‘bye’. Loren and he smiled at me and said ‘bye’. I still love Malcolm an awful lot, even if he is older.'”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 8, 1960 – “but before Malcolm left he kept standing by us and staring at me”

Monday

“Today I went to the beach with Barbara, Joy (Barbara’s girl from La Jolla) and Mabel went too. At night, Barbara and I went down to the Miniature golf course and Loren was working.  When we went up to the office we gave Loren our purses and he looked in Barbara’s purse and got out her book and said to Barbara, ‘Are you still reading ‘Mussel Beach?’ and she said, ‘yes’ and then she said Norma has on in her purse too and he looked in my purse and saw ‘The Rat race’. Now when Barbara and I were through playing M.G. Mal came. I was glad. . .

. . .Nothing Barbara and I said or did tonight turned out very well. . .

2016-08-04 10.31.36

. . .When I was sitting on the counter, Loren kept putting the clubs right in front of my face and I jumped every time he did it and he said, ‘Some people sure are nervous,’ and I said to Loren, ‘If you don’t quit that. . .’ and he said, “If I don’t quit that, what will you do?’ And I didn’t say anything and he smiled. Later, Mr. Richards came and Malcolm and Loren went home but before Malcolm left he kept standing by us and staring at me and when Barbara won her 5 games and she was signing her name, Loren stood there and looked at me and he would smile. Later on, Barbara told Malcolm she won 5 free games again and he looked at me right away and said, ‘You’ve won 5 times haven’t you?’ A while before Malcolm got there tonight, Barbara took my shades out of my purse and put them on and Loren saw them and said, ‘Oh no, now they’re wearing shades,’ and Barbara said, ‘They’re not mine. They’re hers,” and he said something but now I can’t remember what.  I love Malcolm (forever).”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 7, 1960 – “‘Her face is as red as her hair’ and when he said that I really got embarrassed”

Sunday

“Today in the morning Barbara and I went down to the M.G.C. to see who was there. Mr. Richards was there so we did not go in there.  Pretty soon, we walked home and then we went out with Barbara’s Mom and Dad. Then at night Barbara and I went down to the M.G.C. again. Malcolm and Loren was there. We walked up to the office and gave Loren our money. Mal was playing baseball. When we were up at the office, Loren said something to us but now I can’t remember what it was. I kept asking Barbara to ask Mal to play and then on the 3rd hole she went over and asked him and he played.  He beat me by 22 points. . .

. . .When we were through playing Barbara and I sat on the counter,

2016-08-04 10.30.39

. . .then I asked Loren if I could have my purse and he kept saying ‘what purse, I don’t see any purse’ then I asked Mal to get it for me and he said, ‘no’. But after a while Malcolm gave it to me and I went into the bathroom to put some lipstick on and then I came out and told Loren to put my purse back up there. My hairspray was laying on top of everything else in my purse so you could see it and Loren looked down in my purse and said ‘Wow, let’s put this smelly purse way up on top’ Then later Barbara was going to call her mother to see if I could spend the night, but she was too chicken to ask to use the phone. So, I asked. When Barbara and I was standing there, Malcolm and Loren said, ‘I smell something around here that smells like perfume.’ I guess he knew that Barbara and I were listening when he said that. . . .

. . .Barbara turned away but I just stood there and turned red, then Mal said to Loren, ‘Her face is as red as her hair’ and when he said that I really got embarrassed and I went over to the bench and sat down. In a minute Barbara came over and sat down. Then Mal came over and stood by us. Well that’s about all that happened tonight. When Barbara’s folks came Barb said goodbye to Mal and I smiled at him.

Norma + Malcolm (forever).

P.S. When I asked Mal for my purse he said ‘no’ I said ‘Loren’ in a real high voice and Mal kept sayin ‘Loren, Loren, Loren’ real fast and high up just like Frank.

P.P.S. Tonight, a few minutes after Barbara called her mother, I went up to the office and asked Mal if I could have a Hershey with Almonds and he said ‘no’ and then he said, ‘I’ll get you one if you give me half of it,’ and I said, ‘o.k.’ So, he gave it to me. So, I broke it in half but he wouldn’t take it. Before that I asked Loren for a candy bar and I handed him a 50 cent piece and he said, ‘That will be 45 cents tax’ and he laughed. Amo Malcolm.” (I Love Mal)
