Miss Norma’s Diary – August 6, 1960 – “she wanted to run out in the street and jump on his car”

Saturday

“Today Barbara and I went down the street to the shops and then we went down by the M.G.C. Then we decided to go to La Jolla. We went up by Malcolm’s house and his car was there. We fooled around there for a while and then we went down by the water then when we went back up to the bench on the corner. We saw a blue station wagon coming.

. . .We both looked at the license plate number and then we knew it was Loren’s. . .

2016-08-04 10.29.39

. . .Barbara started jumping up and down, she wanted to run out in the street and jump on his car. Later on we went home.  At night we went down to the M.G.C. and Loren was there, Barbara and I had gobs of perfume on and when we went up to the office and Loren said, ‘Umm, I smell something.” When Loren wasn’t looking, Barbara and I started cracking up.

. . .Well today when I was at Barbara’s, Mal’s car went by with Mr. and Mrs. Richards in it. Mrs. Richards saw me through the window and she waved. At the Miniature golf course tonight Mrs. Richards said she was looking for us last night because it was their night off and they wanted to take us up to the Clairmont golf course. When she told me that I could have killed Barbara. Also tonight, a boy went by with big muscles and she said, ‘You know Malcolm went in for that for a while,’ and she said he had all kinds of weights.  Amo Mal.” (I Love Mal)

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 5, 1960 – “Mabel and I went to the Midway Drive-in to see ‘The Story of Ruth'”

Friday

“Today I stayed home all day and watched television. . .

. . .Tonight we did not go to the miniature golf course. . .

2016-08-04 10.28.41

. . .Mabel and I went to the Midway Drive-in to see ‘The Story of Ruth‘ and ‘The Snow Queen’. On the way to the drive-in, Mabel drove by the Miniature golf course and nobody but Jimmy was there. I don’t think Malcolm went there at all tonight because last night I said to him, ‘I’ll see you tomorrow’ and he said, ‘I don’t know, maybe.'”

The Story of Ruth – Movie 1960

This movie came out in 1960 and it is an American historical romance of a Moabitess priestess named Ruth who is attracted to a Judean man and his description of a forgiving God. When tragedy strikes, she begins a new life in Bethlehem. It is an adaptation of the biblical ‘Book of Ruth’.

The movie begins with the life of Ruth as she is sold as a young child by her father for money to be raised in the service of their god and grows to be a pagan idolatress who is a spiritual leader of a young Moabitess girl named Tebah. Unfortunately, Tebah is being sacrificed soon to Chemosh who is a Moabite deity. Ruth then meets and instructs a man named Mahlon, a Judean artisan, to polish Tebah’s ritual crown for her sacrifice.  That is when Mahlon begins to question Ruth about the existence of Chemosh, the god that Tebah is to be sacrificed to.

When Ruth witnesses this ritual sacrifice, she is upset by it all a flees. She then endures a long life of struggles, losing her husband and being condemned for her Pagan past. Eventually, she marries again and the film ends with some quotes from the Book of Ruth.

This movie was done by 20th Century Fox and is the biblical retelling of the Book of Ruth which includes human sacrifice, pagan rituals, plenty of drama, a love story, a love loss and lots of fascinating scenarios. Ruth is the descendant of King David and this movie deals with the beauty of one of the Bible’s most epic love stories.

Here is the full movie, if you wish to see what young people, like Miss Norma, were watching at the drive-in during the year 1960.  Enjoy:

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 4, 1960 – “I didn’t think he would talk to me, but he did, he talked and talked”

Thursday

“Today Barbara and I fooled around in the shops for a while and then we went down to the Miniature golf course and talked to Jimmy for a long time. Then at night we went down there again and Malcolm was there.  I didn’t know whether I was glad or not because. . .

. . .I didn’t think he would talk to me, but he did, he talked and talked. . .

2016-07-24 19.32.40

. . .Barbara and I played one game of golf and then Malcolm’s father came and Mr. Richards asked us if we wanted to play another game so we were on the 2nd hole and Barbara wanted Malcolm to play with us. So did I. So, she went and asked him to play and he said ‘yes’. I was very surprised. As we played, Mal kept looking at me. He would just stand there and stare at me. At ten ‘o clock, Mal went home and he said ‘goodbye’ to me. Amo Mal”

WWII – Handwritten Letter – 1942 – “the Japs are watering them with poison water”

This appears to be a letter to a young lady who served in 1942 at a place in Canada called ‘Lakeview’ which was the home for many war time munitions plants during WWII. One large munitions factory in Lakeview was staffed by mostly women at that time. This is a letter from mother to daughter:

“By the way, what kind of Ad did you answer? There are two letters here now from strange soldier names.”

Lakeview One 7-23-1942

2016-08-01 19.11.19

“Dearest Rosetta,

Gordon tells me you are looking for a letter – I wrote and gave to him to mail Tues so you would get it Wed when you got to Uncle Earl’s. So, maybe you will get it today. Are you having a good time? We got your letter yesterday. . .

. . .Grand Dad came over with Earl yesterday and stayed all nite with us. . .

2016-08-01 19.12.15

. . .Dad and I went fishing Tues nite out by Bob Weir’s gate in Crooked Creek and I sure showed him up. I caught 4 – two of them 14 inches long and he only got one. I’m afraid he is going to Roaring Springs this evening so I’ll be alone till midnite or so.  I’m going to get my permanent this evening so I can’t go – don’t want to go there anyway. I took your gift to Wanda last nite She called the party off there. . .

. . .Leona G. is trying to cut you out with the soldiers, I guess. . .

2016-08-01 19.14.43

. . .She and Alfred took Floyd and another one fishing Sun and then they are having a party for some of them tonite. Leona is leaving for it Sunday. Guess Dou didn’t go fishing thou. By the way, what kind of an ad did you answer – there are two letters here now from strange soldier names. One a Downs from March Field, the other a Beymer from Marco Calif. . .

. . . Dorothy P. and I still think we should censor them. . .

2016-08-01 19.17.57

. . .Wish I had brought my green stamp book up town with me and I would have sent it over with this and you could have got something with it. If you have time go in and look and see what they have for one book that we might like and maybe we can get it thru the mail. . .

. . .I still haven’t heard of any dance except at Westside. Was talking to Garrett the other day and someone at the theatre must have told him you got fired. I just let him think it. Tell Aunt Dorothy to save her sugar as I have my eye on some wild plums up by the laundry. . .

. . .Gordon says the Japs are watering them with poison water but we will chance that. . .

2016-08-01 19.18.38

. . .We’ll be looking for you Sat. . .

. . .With Love. . .

. . .Mother and Dad. . .

. . .P.S. Later – I went down home and got my stamp book. Pick out something nice. I like the blanket Grandma got but you do the choosing. Oh yes, I just saw Garrett and he said there is a dance at Eagle hall too.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – August 1, 1960 – “I’m still trying to get Mal”

Monday

“Today I didn’t do anything much. In the afternoon Barbara and I went down to the M.G.C. and Jimmy and Mr. Richards was there. At night Bill, Mabel, Barbara and I went down to the M.G.C. Loren was there and so was his father. A little while after we got there Loren left and a long time later Mal and Mrs. Richards came. . .

. . .They only stayed a minute but Mal said ‘hi!’ to me. . .

2016-07-24 19.29.23

. . .I was real surprised too. I didn’t think he would say a word to me. Well, there is nothing else to say. . .
Except I’m still trying to get Mal and I hope he doesn’t go to San Francisco to college because I don’t think I could stand to not see him.”

Miss Norma’s Diary – July 31, 1960 – “and then we were talking about cars”

Sunday

“Today I stayed home most of the day and then at night we went to the M.G.C. Mr. and Mrs. Richards was there. Barbara and I played one game and then we went over to the Wash Place to see Mrs. Richards and we were there for a while talking to her. She was talking about her boys most of the time and then we were talking about cars and she said, ‘I hate to drive with Mal but Lorrin is a good driver.’ . . .

. . .Which I don’t believe at all. . .

2016-07-24 19.25.05

. . .When she was through with her washing she drove us back to the M.G.C and Bill was there so Bill, Barbara and I played a game and Mr. Richards let us have it free.

I’m Sorry – Brenda Lee 1960’s

This song by Brenda Lee was recorded in early 1960 and it went straight to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles.

It reached it’s peak in July 1960 and ended up being the pop star’s ‘definitive song’. It was written by Dub Allbritten and Ronnie Self. It also managed to make it to #12 in the UK. The singer, Brenda Lee was a 15-year-old gir at the time she recorded this song and it was said that she was ‘not mature enough’ to sing about this type of love. Therefore, after it was recorded, it was initially held back from the public until it was finally released and then it was considered to be one of the ‘finest teen pop songs of its era’.

Eventually, this song became a fixture in ‘country oldies’ programs as it was ultimately considered to be a country song.

Lyrics:

I’m sorry, so sorry That I was such a fool I didn’t know Love could be so cruel Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, yes

You tell me mistakes Are part of being young But that don’t right The wrong that’s been done

(I’m sorry) I’m sorry (So sorry) So sorry Please accept my apology But love is blind And I was too blind to see Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, yes

You tell me mistakes Are part of being young But that don’t right The wrong that’s been done Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh Oh, yes
