“Today I didn’t go to school again. At night me and Barbara went to the show. When we were standing in line, Benny and Vern and Ray & Wayne came. Then Benny put his arm around me and then he said, ‘Oh! Sorry Vern.’ And he said, ‘Oh! That’s okay.’

And that really made me mad.

When we got in the show we sat down near the front and pretty soon they walked by us and they wouldn’t even look back. Later, we saw Bonnie and her brother so Barbara asked Bonnie to sit by us so she did. Then she said, ‘How come you’re no sitting with Vern?’ And I said, ‘Oh cause of Benny and Ray.’ We sat two rows behind Vern and them guys and Vern was pissed off at me. Ray came over and said, ‘Vern wants you to come up there.’ But I wouldn’t because he didn’t ask me. Vern is really pissed off at me and I felt the same way about him.”

“Today I went to school, after school I came home and Barbara called me up and she said she saw Vern and Brian on the bus and they told her to come down to the beach and Brian told her to bring some food and Vern told her to tell me to wear my bathing suit. So, I went down to Barbara’s house and we went down to Foodbasket and she bought some hot dogs and potato chips.

I didn’t wear my bathing suit because Barbara didn’t tell me to until I got to her house.

When we got down to the beach, Ray, Vern, Brian, Bonnie and some other guy was there. Vern said, ‘Norma, how come you don’t have your bikini?’ and I said ‘Because Barbara didn’t tell me until I got to her house’. and he said, ‘Oh! Barbara.’ Later, Bonnie and Barb and I walked down to the water and Bonnie said to me, ‘You know, my brother likes you.’ And I got all shook. At night, I didn’t go out. NORMA + VERN”

“Today Barbara’s folks said she couldn’t go out because of last night. So, they was going to go on a picnic but she got to stay anyway. So, we told her folks we was gonna go to the beach and go swimming and we’d be back at 5:00 so we went down there and we went and laid down on the beach but they didn’t see us. Vern and Ray and Brian and Bonnie and Wayne were over at the high bars. Later, Bonnie, Ray and Brian went down the beach further and Vern left later. We saw Vern walk down the beach. Ray and Brian and some other guys were up at the fire ring building a fire and Bonnie was down at the water. So, we went down to Bonnie and we talked a long time and then she told us to come up by the fire so we said we’d get our stuff so we did but I didn’t want to go up by the fire so we went and laid by Bonnie’s towel.

Then Brian and Vern came up to us and told us to come up by the fire.

So, we did. Then Vern kept smiling at me and he said, ‘Boy, I never thought I’d see Norma in a bikini.’ And Bonnie said, ‘why’ and he said ‘ because she’s Norma.’ Brian had this sheet and Bonnie wrapped Brian up in it and Ray too. Then they went surfing. We just sat there for a long time and then one of the guys went and got some marshmallows. So, then, Barbara and I went to Jack-in-the-Box and got something to eat. Then we came back. They were talking about having a beach party tonight and Vern was almost begging me to come and I said, ‘I don’t know if Barbara can go.’ and he said, ‘Well, that doesn’t mean you can’t.’ Then Ray and Brain was trying to drag Bonnie in the water but they didn’t succeed. Then they tried to put me in the water but they didn’t get me either. A little while after that we had to leave and they all asked us to come to the party and then we left and Vern waved to me. But Barbara and didn’t want to go to the party because in case the cops and our folks. N+V”

“Today Barbara had to stay home all day and do work but she had to go to the store and her mother said she had to go to Foodbasket. So, we were glad. So, on the way to the store we went by the golf course and Vern and Brian wasn’t there.

So, we walked down to the high bars and I saw Brian laying in the sand.

He waved to us and told us to come down so we did. Then Vern came over to us and he looked real pissed and he said to me, ‘ How come you weren’t at the show last night?’ and I said , ‘I didn’t go because you said you weren’t going.’ Then pretty soon, we had to leave so at night we went down to the golf course and they were there but so was a bunch of 8th grade girls. But pretty soon, they left and then Ray and Bonnie and Wayne and a bunch of other kids came and Brian and Vern wouldn’t.”

Today I went to school and right after school I went to the football game at Mission Bay and after the game we walked home and before we went home we went down to the miniature golf course and Vern was there. He said he wasn’t going to the show because he couldn’t get the money. So, we went down there later that night and Vern wasn’t there so later, Bonnie came and she asked us if we had seen Vern and Kenny said he went to the show and then I got real mad.

Then later, there was this guy there who kept flirting with me.

But I didn’t think he was very cute and besides, I like Vern.

“Today I went to school and nothing good happened. I think I finally decided I don’t like Warren anymore. After school, I told Connie I didn’t want to go down the street so when I got home, Barb called up and we went down to the beach and Tony and Vern weren’t there. So, we went up to the golf course and Ray, Vern, Tony, Wally, Benny and this other guy was there. So, we went in there and Vern smiled real big and I smile back. Then after Barb and I were standing over by Jimmy and Vern was over with the guys. Jimmy kept disguising his voice and calling ‘Vern’ to make Vern think it was me and I kept telling Jimmy to shut his mouth.

So, pretty soon, we went down to the beach and Tony just stared at us until we couldn’t see anymore. We thought they would follow us so we walked real slow but they weren’t coming. So, we went back to see if they were still there but they weren’t. . .

So, we walked down to the vacant lot and they were walking down to the beach. . .

So, we didn’t let them see us until they crossed the street and then we ran like hell to beat them there. They got there just before we did so we ran down the cliff real fast and got on the swings.

Vern kept looking at me. Pretty soon, he shouted to me and he said to watch him and he he did some real weird trick on the high bars and after he did that he and Tony came over and they started playing on the swings. Then I told Barbara to push me so she did and Tony got her swing then he got out of it. Barb got it back and then Tony pushed her out of it. So Vern came up to me and he said, ‘Can I have your swing please, Norma?’ and so I gave it to him. Pretty soon, we had to leave and so Barb asked Vern if he was going to be down to the golf course tonight and he said ‘yes’. So, we went down to the golf course at night and Vern and Loren was there. So, when we went up there, Vern smiled at me. Then we played a game. By the time we were finished, Tony was there and we were both mad. When we got through, we sat on the bench and Vern and Tony left. They were heading toward the beach and Vern said, ‘come on’.

About 15 minutes later, we started to leave and Lance and some other boy was there and Lance said something about my behind and then he asked us if we wanted to go for a ride. But we didn’t pay any attention to him. When we started to go down to the beach, we walked down by the alley and I saw 2 guys walking from the beach and I knew it was them. So, we rant like hell down Thomas Street and Tony kept stopping to tie his shoe. I think he was just stalling because I think he saw us. So, anyway, we went down to the beach and then we started walking back and I turned around and ran as fast as I could because Barb’s folks were driving by so we ran like hell down to the golf course and we sat on the table outside.

I was still real nervous and somebody yelled ‘boo’ and it was Tony and Vern. I told Tony he scared the crap out of me. Then Tony wanted to borrow a dime from Barbara but I told him I give it to him. So, I went and got some change. I was real surprised that they were talking to us. Later, Tony and Vern was playing chess and then Vern’s sister came and her and Tony were arguing like mad. Kenny was there and Barbara was bowling with him so I played baseball. Vern was watching me and so was Tony. Later, they were playing baseball and Tony said, ‘What’s on tomorrow night at the show?’ and Vern said, ‘I don’t know but I’m gonna go pester Norma.’ While Vern and Tony was playing chess, Vern said, ‘Oh Tony, you screwed up my move and Vern’s sister said to Vern, ‘If you say that word anymore I’ll slap you across the face.’

At 8:00 Vern and his sister left. Vern said goodbye to me and I said bye back. But I wanted Barb to ask him if he was going to the show Friday night or Saturday night. I don’t know how come Vern got to stay out till 8:30 tonight.

“Today I went to school as always and Warren didn’t pay a bit of attention to me until after school Then he and his brother was walking and as we had almost passed Warren’s house, he was walking right behind me almost stepping on my heels. I think I made him jealous because Gene and two other guys drove by in a car and I waved to Gene so they went around the block again. After school, I tried to get out of going down the street with Connie but I couldn’t. So, we went down and got Barb. Barbara said to Connie and me mostly, ‘Let’s get home early today so I can go up to your house.’ So, we went in about 2 stores and then Barb and I said there’s no place to go so we went up to my house and Connie went home. Then Barb and I went back down the street and went down to the beach but it was almost 4:15 then. So, Loren and Tony was not there so we went to the golf course and they were there. When we went in there, Vern said ‘Hi, Norma!’ and then he smiled.

He was smiling all the time we were there.

When we started to leave, Vern said, ‘Where you going? Down to the beach?’ and I said ‘yes’. When we came back they were all waking toward Tony’s house. At night, we came down there and Vern was there. We found out that Vern is 15 and he’s lived here for about a month and he was talking to some boy about moving to La Jolla and I hope that’s not what he said because I don’t want him to move there. Then he said something about going up there Friday right after school but I hope he doesn’t move Friday night if he moves because then he probably won’t go to the show Saturday nigh. Vern is one of 4 brothers or else he has four brothers and his twin sister. One of his brothers goes to P.B.J.H. Well, at 8:00 Vern had to go home but I still can’t figure out where he lives but he can’t move to La Jolla because he won’t go to the show and I won’t see him any more. I love Vern.”
