Miss Norma’s Diary – October 11, 1960 – “Vern started talking to me which I didn’t think he’d do”

Tuesday

“Today in school Warren didn’t look at me or Connie very much and I really got pissed off at Connie today because she was telling everybody about last night and how cute Vern was and then what really pissed me off, she crossed Warren off all her books and she put Vern’s name and I called her everything I could think of. After school I told Connie I didn’t want to go down the street and so when I got home, Barb and I went down to the beach and Ray and Vern and Tony was there but none of them would say a word to us. Barbara and I were swinging and Dick, Don and some other boy was down there with him. Well anyway, once in a while, Vern would look at me but then he would turn away. Pretty soon, Ray and Very left and then Barb and I went over to the teeter totters.

We left right after Tony did and I was about to cuss him out too.

When we left, we went down to the golf course and before we walked in there, I said to Barbara, ‘They’re in there.’ I came here for the baseball machines and they were in there. When we went in there, Vern looked at me for a minute and then he turned away. Ray said something to me but I couldn’t understand it. Barb and I sat down and then we got a coke. After we drank our coke, we still sat there. I was just staring at Vern to see if he would smile but he wouldn’t. Pretty soon, we walked out of there and Vern watched me. Then I turned back at him and I just stared at him. Then he cracks a smile and said, ‘Why don’t you get a camera?’ and I said, ‘I think I will.’ Then I smiled and we walked on down to the beach. Then we walked back down to the course and Benny waved to me so I waved back.

At night, Barb and I went down to the golf course and Ray and Very and Loren and some other guys were down there. So, we went up there and Vern started talking to me which I didn’t think he’d do. Then Loren said something about Connie and Vern asked where Connie was and I looked at him and said, ‘I don’t know and I couldn’t care less.’ When we got finished, Ray had left and Henry and Larry was there and Larry had a skate board. So, Loren was trying it and then Vern was trying it. Vern’s twin sister was there. Before that, while Barbara and I were still playing, Vern went across the street with Tony and somebody else. I didn’t want him to leave so I stood there and watched him. I guess he was watching me too because he waved and I waved back. So, tomorrow I am going to make Connie jealous I hope and all I have to say is she better not flirt with Vern or I’ll cuss her out for all she’s worth.”
